Large Eddy Simulation of Complex Boundary Layer Flows with Interactions

Computational Fluid Dynamics

Universität Stuttgart

Institut für Aerodynamik und Gasdynamik (IAG)

This project is concerned with the application of our high-order discontinuous Galerkin CFD framework FLEXI, developed by the Numerics Research Group at the Institute of Aerodynamics and Gasdynamics, University of Stuttgart. High-order methods promise a significant increase in computational efficiency over low-order methods currently used in industrial applications and therefore are an important research topic. Over the last years, we continuously developed and improved our open source framework FLEXI. A major aspect of the ongoing development includes the application of the framework for large eddy simulation with increasing complexity as well as pushing the limits of computational fluid dynamics. We use these methods and apply them to highly complex large scale real world testcases to investigate the interaction of a turbulent wing wake impinging on a high Re turbulent boundary layer on the horizontal tail plane. This is a corner stone within the DFG research group FOR 2895.
