High resolution climate modelling with the CLM regional model

Climate Research

Institut für Meteorologie und Klimaforschung, Troposphärenforschung (TRO)

The working group "Regional Climate" at the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research - IMK-TRO at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) uses the “Hawk" at the HLRS high performance computing facilities to investigate past, present and future regional climate. Simulations are performed on a for (sub-)regions of Europe and Germany. We currently use the regional climate model COSMO-CLM (Rockel et al., 2008) down to “convection permitting” scales of 1-3 km grid resolution. We will replace it with ICON-CLM (van Pham et al., 2020) and contribute to its further development and optimization. The topics are regional climate change and extremes, land surface processes, ensemble simulations, very high resolution climate simulations. We are also involved in several nationally funded programs (RegIKlim, ClimXtreme) and international projects like the CORDEX CMIP6 activities and the CORDEX Flagship Pilot Studies Convection and LUCAS.
