A large number of problems of scientific or industrial origin are expressed with mathematical models using a continuum description of the underlying processes, which results in a system of partial differential equations to be solved in time and space. For this reason, we have developed UG4, a software framework for the efficient numerical solution of problems that are described by systems of par- tial differential equations, based on Finite Volume and Finite Element methods. UG4 contains a large library of parallel solution methods for linear, nonlinear, and time dependent problems, as well as a parallel grid manager capable of local refinement and coarsening of unstructured meshes in two and three spatial dimensions. Recent results indicate, e.g., that exploiting scalability allows to reduce wall clock computing times from 24h time frames to the order of minutes. Similarly, employing adaptivity allows reducing computational resources by a factor of 50 and more.
