Seasonal simulation of weather extremes

Climate Research

Universität Hohenheim

Institut für Physik und Meteorologie

Extensive research is currently ongoing concerning the added value of global sub-seasonal to seasonal simulations on the convection permitting (CP) scale, covering a period between 2 weeks and a few months. Simulations on the CP resolution are considered as highly suitable for next-generation climate projections, sub-seasonal to seasonal forecasting, as well as for numerical weather prediction (NWP) applications. However, the required computational resources are still a very challenging task and can also impose a limitation on the feasibility. Within this project it is planned to perform first simulations with the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) on a CP resolution of 3 km for 5-14 simulation days. In addition, an unprecedented simulation with a horizontal resolution of 1.5 km covering the same time period is planned.
