Hydropower plants are operated with increasing flexibility, which leads to an increasing number of transient operations such as start-up and stop, and also to steady-state operation at deep partial load or speed-no-load. In both cases, undesirable flow phenomena occur that increase component damage. The calculation of this damage is important for safe and economical operation, but requires high resolved CFD simulations and thus a significant computational effort. In this project, CFD simulations of transient processes will be performed to enable subsequent calculation of the damage within structural analyses. The workflow and setup will also be investigated to improve accuracy and reduce computational effort. In addition, several deep partial load operating points are simulated to better understand their flow phenomena. The added mass, damping and stiffness of different operating conditions will also be calculated in CFD simulations.
