Hadronic conributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon from Lattice QCD

The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is a precision observable that provides a sensitive test of the validity of the Standard Model. Following the recent new direct measurement by the E989 experiment, the tension with the Standard Model prediction, which is dominated by hadronic effects, has increased to 4.2 standard deviations. The purpose of this proposal is a precision determination of the hadronic vacuum polarisation in lattice QCD. This will also help in clarifying the tension between some lattice calculations and the traditional data-driven method for the evaluation of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution. In order to control all systematic errors, one must avoid long extrapolations in the pion mass and focus on small lattice spacings for a reliable extrapolation to the continuum limit.
