In order to meet the requirements for turbomachines to ensure safe operation in a wide range at high efficiency, phenomena such as flow-induced blade vibrations or diffuser stability must be addressed in the design process. Given the complexity of such phenomena, large-scale computations are required that lead to high computational costs. Over the past decade, the Institute of Thermal Turbomachinery and Machinery Laboratory (ITSM) has researched intensively both numerically and experimentally in this field and has advanced the state-of-the-art of CFD simulations considerably. With the current project, the application shall be taken to the next level which is necessary to account for more challenging design boundary conditions of thermal turbomachines. Always with the goal to come closer to a so-called digital twin.
