The current research project is a follow-up of a test project which was about studying the performance of the Lattice Boltzmann (LB) software Palabos on the HPC system HAWK. The current research project is about LB simulations of electrochemical systems. We focus on transport processes and reaction mechanisms in battery technologies with fluidic electrolytes and highly porous, complex electrode structures. Usually, finite element or finite volume methods are utilized to solve the charge and species transport in those systems. However, they have the disadvantage that building a mesh for irregular electrode structures is computationally challenging. As LB solvers evolve velocity distributions locally on a computational lattice, the LB method is especially advantageous for the microstructure-resolved simulation of transport in complex geometries and therefore used in the current research project.
