Highly Resolved Hybrid RANS LES Simulation of a Model Kaplan Turbine

The overall goal of this project is to improve simulations of Kaplan turbines. Different simulations of a double regulated model Kaplan turbine without geometric simplifications on increasingly fine meshes with advanced hybrid RANS LES turbulence models are planned to investigate the occurring flow phenomena and interactions in-depth. Furthermore, simulations with different numerical setups are to be carried out. This gives the opportunity to assess the capabilities of the SBES turbulence model in a practical application. To validate the numerical results, integral values, like power and total head, and three-dimensional phase resolved PIV measurements on three measurement planes in the turbine for different operating points are available.
