LASMD

Laser Ablation of Solids by Molecular Dynamics

Solid State Physics

The project consists of two parts. Part 1: Atomistic study of laser ablation of Silicon with an extended two-temperature model for covalent materials. For the first time, simulations will be carried out with quasi-two-dimensional samples of large µm-sized diameter. Here tranverse transport phenomena play an important role. Part 2: Simulation of 3D laser printing, especially the selective laser melting method. Real systems are still too large for simulation, so the system has to be scaled down and the printing material has to be represented by spheres of different sizes. To improve quality, protictive gas has to be added. The goal of the simulation is to study the creation of defects, the inclusion of gas, the prvention of droplet formation among other features.
