The ambitious exaFOAM project aims at overcoming the current limitations of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technology, especially in what concerns the exploitation of massively parallel HPC architectures. Our focus is on (i) the I/O performance and (ii) offshore wind parks simulations. On one hand, a reduction of the number of files, as well as I/O operations, is required in order to enable usability of OpenFOAM applications on modern parallel file systems such as LUSTRE attached to petascale as well as future exascale HPC systems. On the other hand. the importance of the high-fidelity simulation of offshore wind parks lies on the efficiency loss induced by the wake of the turbines on the turbines downwind. The correct prediction of these losses is crucial for the efficient design and successful management of wind farms.
