Our project is concerned with the modeling of elastic waves in
heterogeneous media with different explicit finite difference
(FD) schemes. For example we apply the so-called rotated
staggered grid FD technique. Using this modified grid it is
possible to simulate the propagation of elastic waves in a 2D or
3D medium containing cracks, pores or free surfaces without
hard-coded boundary conditions. Therefore it allows efficient
and precise numerical studies of different fractured structures.
We use our MPI modeling code Craymod to solve different acoustic
problems. The length scale of our modelings varies from centimeters
for non-destructive testing experiments to kilometers for
considerations with refraction seismics.
